Was HCPSS right to cancel sports and other extracurriculars until Jan. 15 over Covid-19 worries?

Howard County Public Schools announced on Tuesday, December 14th all sports events and other extracurricular activities scheduled for Tuesday have been postponed amid rapidly rising covid cases at some of its high schools.

“This decision was made out of an abundance of caution for the health of our students and staff,” the school system said in a statement. “HCPSS is reviewing positive case and outbreak data.”

If the safety of HCPSS students and staff is the priority, then why was only sports and extracurriculars targeted for closing? Wouldn’t you think HCPSS would close in-person schooling and revert to virtual classrooms?

And now that the CDC has made everyone regardless of age-eligible to receive the Covid-19 vaccine, for how long will Howard County be subject to the threat of closures?

Do you agree with HCPSS’s decision?
