School Redistricting: Kittleman Fast-tracks Land Purchase for New Elementary School Near Turf Valley

Earlier this month, County Executive Allan H. Kittleman reached an agreement to buy a 12-acre site in western Ellicott City near Turf Valley for use by the Howard County Public School System to build a new elementary school.

School Board Votes To Scale Back Redistricting

Allan Kittleman’s announcement comes as much needed relief to parents and families concerned over several redistricting plans discussed by the Howard County Board of Education. Just days after the purchase agreement, the School Board voted to scale back redistricting plans.

Kittleman fast-tracked the purchase to address concerns regarding overcrowding at several elementary schools across the county. The acquisition provides HCPSS with greater flexibility to implement changes to its Capital Improvements Program and was an item requested by Interim Superintendent Dr. Michael J. Martirano.

“After speaking with Dr. Martirano, we have been in discussions with the property owner to make this purchase to help address the anticipated long-term student population growth in our elementary schools,” said Kittleman. “The redistricting process underscored the urgency to accelerate this purchase, and I am glad that we have been able to take this step now.”
