Hejeebu’s appointment offers important diversity and special education credentials to the Board of Education.
In a statement, the County Executive offered: “We were fortunate to have many talented, qualified candidates express interest in this position, and I appreciate their willingness to apply.
We spent a great deal of time considering the best fit for the current board. Mr. Hejeebu brings the right experience and commitment to the position.
His personal experience with special education, understanding of the HCPSS budget and business background uniquely qualifies him to bring a fresh perspective to the Board of Education.
As the Board goes through this transition phase with an interim superintendent, Mr. Hejeebu’s management experience and community involvement will assist the Board in making decisions.”
Mr. Hejeebu’s appointment came after Board Member Christine O’Connor stepped down from the seven-member board.

He serves on the Howard County Transition Commission for Youth with Disabilities and the Howard County Public School System Budget Review Committee, which was established by the Howard County Council.
Hejeebu has been involved closely with special education programs as a parent and advocate for his son.
Said Hejeebu, “We have lived through Howard County special education for 17 years now, and I’ve been involved with the Transition Commission. The question is, how do we, as a school system, help prepare these young people to transition out of the system at age of 21 and be productive, contributing members of the community.”

In addition to the Transition Commission and Budget Review Committee, Hejeebu is Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors for Leadership Howard County and is on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Howard County Chamber of Commerce. He serves as an Elder at Grace Community Church in Fulton and has volunteered for the Community Foundation of Howard County, the Baltimore Area Salvation Army and Howard County Youth Sports.
Hejeebu holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering from West Virginia University and a Masters in Business Administration from Johns Hopkins University.
Hejeebu’s selection was was made after an application process whereby local residents were encouraged to seek consideration via an application.
Under state law, the county executive appoints a qualified individual to fill any vacancy on the Board and that individual must be a resident of Howard County and a registered voter.
Early in the process, County Executive Allan Kittleman made it known he would be prioritizing candidates who are committed to ensuring HCPSS remains a top-ranked school system and with experience involving special needs education.
The Howard County Council will consider the appointment at its June 5 legislative session and during the June 19 public hearing. If confirmed, Hejeebu will serve for the remainder of O’Connor’s term through December 2018.
